Translation of the treatise “The History of Gilan” (Persian Tarikh-e Gilan) by Abd al-Fattah Fumani from Persian into Russian

The International Talysh Foundation (ITF) and the Talysh National Academy (TNA) announce a call for research and translation grants for the translation of the treatise "History of Gilan" (Pers. Tarikh-e Gilan) by Abd-al-Fattah Fumani from Persian into Russian (305 pages with an average of 850-1250 characters with spaces per page. The text is available at the link).

The grant is open to Iranianists (including PhD students) and translators of texts from Persian.

The amount of the grant is 3000 euros.

Applicants with experience in translating Persian texts from the 16th-18th centuries will be given preference. Publications of the applicants on the history of Talysh and Gilan (in particular of the 16th-18th centuries) are also an advantage, but not a prerequisite for participation in the competition.

The application should include a bibliography of the applicants' published translations from Persian (the works that are closest to Abd-al-Fattah Fumani's treatise in terms of language, period and/or localisation of events should be listed at the top of the list) and, if available, publications on Iranian history (the works that are closest to Abd-al-Fattah Fumani's treatise in terms of period and/or localisation of events should be listed at the top of the list).

The application may be submitted either by a single applicant or by a group of applicants of not more than 3 persons. In the latter case, the application should include information on all applicants separately. In addition, a group leader who will be responsible for bringing the final text into a consistent stylistic and grammatical format and for financial accountability to the grantors shall be identified. The distribution of the grant within the group shall be determined by the researchers themselves, but they must indicate this in their application.

A translation of the first three pages of the first chapter of the treatise must be submitted with the application. In case the application is submitted by a group of co-applicants, the first co-applicant (group leader) submits the translation of the first three pages of the first chapter (pages 24-26 in the book), the second co-applicant submits the translation of pages 4-6 (pages 27-29 in the book), and the third co-applicant submits the translation of pages 7-9 (pages 30-32 in the book). The translation style of each applicant must be retained without modification by other applicants.

Grant providers give preference to the winning of a single application submitted by one applicant or a group of applicants, but reserve the right to distribute the grant among several applicants of no more than 3 persons. In such a case, the treatise will be divided for translation into equal parts between the winning applicants. At a possible second stage of the competition, grant providers will determine a group leader according to the results of the interviews conducted with the applicants. The group leader will be responsible for bringing the final text into a consistent stylistic and grammatical format. The distribution of the grant will be as follows: in the case of two successful applicants, the team leader will receive €1,650 and the second applicant €1,350; in the case of three successful applicants, the group leader will receive €1,180 and the other two applicants €910 each. Financial accountability to grant providers will remain with each winner.

The translation must be completed within 6 months (by 10 October 2024). By 10 November 2024, the translation will be prepared for printing by ITF and TNA staff. The proofreading of the prepared translation must be completed by the applicants by 10 December 2024. The grant will be awarded in instalments as the translation progresses: €1200 after 50% of the text is completed (by 10 July 2024), €1200 after the remaining 50% of the text is completed (by 10 October 2024), €600 after the layout and final proofreading of the text (by 10 December 2024).

Applicants have the right to propose their own translation calendar, provided that the above payment stages and the deadline for final completion of the project are maintained. In the case of an application submitted by a group of applicants, grant providers expect to reduce the project deadlines.

The nationality and place of residence of applicants is irrelevant in determining grant winners.

The deadline for submission of applications for grant is 21 March 2024 21:00 CET.

After evaluating the submitted applications, the grant providers will announce the winner(s) of the competition by 1 April 2024 or the need for a second stage of the competition. Successful applicants in the second stage will be sent a letter inviting them to an online or offline interview, following which the winner(s) will be announced by 10 April 2024.

Please send applications in the form given below, along with sample translations, by email to info@talyshfund.org and tolishi.akademiya@gmail.com with the note "Abd-al-Fattah Fumani. Translation Grant".
